DEFINITION
Venlafaxine Hydrochloride contains NLT 98.0% and NMT 102.0% of venlafaxine hydrochloride (C17H27NO2-HCl), calculated on the dried basis.

DEFINITION
1-[(1RS)-2-(Dimethylamino)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]cyclohexanol hydrochloride.
Content: 99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent (dried substance).
CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white powder.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water and in methanol, soluble in anhydrous ethanol, slightly soluble or practically insoluble in acetone. It shows polymorphism.
IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
B. It gives reaction of chlorides.
TESTS
Acidity or alkalinity: Dissolve 0.20 g in carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 10 mL with the same solvent. Add 0.05 mL of methyl red solution and 0.1 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid. The solution is pink. Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator to yellow.

Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in vacuo at 80C for 3 h.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
