Acesulfame Potassium or Acesulfame K or Potassium Acesulfamate

Acesulfame Potassium or Ace-K or Acesulfame K or Potassium Acesulfamate is up to 200 times sweeter than table sugar. Ace-K can be found in soft drinks, protein shakes, drink mixes, frozen desserts, baked goods, candy, gum, and tabletop sweeteners. The USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved of Ace-K’s use in soft drinks in 1998, increasing consumer exposure to the ingredient.  Ace-K is heat stable, meaning that it stays sweet even when used at high temperatures during baking, making it suitable as a sugar substitute in baked goods. it has a slightly bitter aftertaste, especially at high concentrations. Acesulfame potassium provides a sweet taste with no caloric value.

General Properties and Specifications of Acesulfame Potassium or Ace-K or Acesulfame K or Potassium Acesulfamate:

3,4-Dihydro-6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4-one-2,2-dioxide potassium salt CAS Number 55589-62-3

DEFINITION
Acesulfame Potassium contains NLT 99.0% and NMT 101.0% of C4H4NO4SK, calculated on the dried basis.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared Absorption 〈197K〉
B. Identification Tests—General, Potassium 〈191〉

Limit of Fluoride: NMT 3 ppm
Acidity or Alkalinity:
Sample solution:  4.0 g in 20 mL of carbon dioxide-free water
Analysis: Add 0.1 mL of bromothymol blue. If the solution is yellow, titrate with 0.01 N sodium hydroxide to produce a blue color. If the solution is blue, titrate with 0.01 N hydrochloride acid to produce a yellow color.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.2 mL of 0.01 N sodium hydroxide or NMT 0.2 mL of 0.01 N hydrochloric acid is required.
Loss on Drying: Dry a sample at 105C for 3 h: it loses NMT 1.0% of its weight.
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in a well-closed container, and protect from light. Store at room temperature.
