Glacial Acetic Acid contains NLT 99.5% and NMT 100.5%, by weight, of C2H4O2.

IDENTIFICATION
Identification Tests—General, Acetate: Meets the requirements
Limit of Nonvolatile Residue: Evaporate 20 mL in a tared dish, and dry at 105c for 1 h: the weight of the residue does not exceed 1.0 mg.
Chloride and Sulfate, Chloride:
Sample solution: Dilute 1.0 mL with 20 mL of water.
Analysis: Add 5 drops of silver nitrate TS.
Acceptance criteria: No opalescence is produced.
Chloride and Sulfate, Sulfate:
Sample solution: Dilute 1.0 mL with 10 mL of water.
Analysis: Add 1 mL of barium chloride TS.
Acceptance criteria: No turbidity is produced.
Readily Oxidizable Substances:
Sample solution: Dilute 2.0 mL in a glass-stoppered vessel with 10 mL of water.
Analysis: Add 0.10 mL of 0.10 N potassium permanganate.
Acceptance criteria: The pink color is not changed to brown within 2 h.
Congealing Temperature: NLT 15.6C.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Identification Tests—General, Acetate: Meets the requirements

Nonvolatile Residue: Analysis: Evaporate 20 mL in a tared porcelain dish on a steam bath, and dry at 105C for 1 h.
Acceptance criteria: The weight of the residue does not exceed 1.0 mg (0.005%).
Chloride: Sample solution: Acetic acid (1 in 10) in water
Analysis: To 10 mL of the Sample solution add 5 drops of silver nitrate TS.
Acceptance criteria: No opalescence is produced.
Sulfate: Sample solution: Acetic acid (1 in 10) in water.
Analysis: To 10 mL of the Sample solution add 5 drops of barium chloride TS.
Acceptance criteria: No turbidity is produced.
Readily Oxidizable Substances: Analysis: Dilute 4.0 mL in a glass-stoppered vessel with 20 mL of water, and add 0.30 mL of 0.10 N potassium permanganate.
Acceptance criteria: The pink color is not changed to brown at once, and the liquid does not become entirely brown or free from a pink tint in less than 30s.

DESCRIPTION
Acetic Acid, Glacial, occurs as a clear, colorless liquid. It boils at about 118. When well diluted with water (e.g., 1:100), it has a vinegar odor and taste. It is miscible with water, with alcohol, and with glycerin.
Function: Acidifier; flavoring agent.

REQUIREMENTS
Identification: A 1:3 aqueous solution gives positive tests for Acetate.
Assay: Not less than 99.5% and not more than 100.5%, by weight, of C2H4O2.
Lead: Not more than 0.5 mg/kg.
Nonvolatile Residue: Not more than 0.005%.
Readily Oxidizable Substances: Passes test.
Solidification Point: Not cooler than 15.6C.
