Dextrine has and E number of E1400 for food application.

Specifications of Dextrin USP NF Grade:

Dextrin is starch, or partially hydrolyzed starch, modified by heating in a dry state, with or without acids, alkalies, or pH control agents. During heating, moisture may be added.

Sample: 1 g
Analysis: Suspend the Sample in 20 mL of water, and add a few drops of iodine.
Acceptance criteria: A blue to reddish-brown color results.
B. Dextrin is very soluble in boiling water, forming a mucilaginous solution (difference from starch).

Reducing Sugars (Dextrose Equivalent):
Acceptance criteria:  -- corresponding to NMT 10%, calculated as dextrose (C6H12O6 ).
Residue on Ignition: NMT 0.5%
Chloride and Sulfate, Chloride:
Acceptance criteria: -- corresponding to NMT 0.2% of chloride.
Limit of Protein: --
Acceptance criteria: NMT 1.0%
Sample: 10.0 g
Analysis: Add the Sample to 100 mL of 70% alcohol, previously neutralized to phenolphthalein. Shake for 1 h, filter, and titrate 50 mL of the filtrate with 0.10 N sodium hydroxide.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 3.0 mL
Botanic Characteristics:
Microscopic: Granules are similar in appearance to the starch from which the Dextrin has been prepared, except that when prepared from corn starch, many of the granules show concentric striations, and when prepared from potato starch, concentric striations are not clearly visible; the hilum is frequently bicleft; and a small proportion of the granules are distorted.
Loss on Drying: Dry a sample at a pressure not exceeding 100 mm of mercury at 120° for 4 h: it loses NMT 13.0% of its weight.

Specifications of Dextrin FCC Food Grade:
INS: 1400 CAS 9004-53-9

Dextrin occurs as free-flowing white, yellow, or brown powders and consist chiefly of polygonal, rounded, or oblong or truncated granules. Dextrin is partially hydrolyzed starch converted by heat alone, or by heating in the presence of suitable food-grade acids and buffers, from any of several grain- or root-based unmodified native starches (e.g., corn, waxy maize, high-amylose maize, milo, waxy milo, potato, arrowroot, wheat, rice, tapioca, sago, etc.). Dextrin is partially to completely soluble in water.
Function: Thickener; colloidal stabilizer; binder; surface-finishing agent.

Labeling: Indicate the presence of sulfur dioxide if the residual concentration is greater than 10 mg/kg.
Identification: Suspend about 1 g of sample in 20 mL of water and add a few drops of iodine. A dark blue to red-brown color appears.
Chloride: Not more than 0.2%.
Crude Fat: Not more than 1.0%.
Lead: Not more than 1 mg/kg.
Loss on Drying: Not more than 13.0%.
Protein: Not more than 1.0%.
Reducing Sugars: Not more than 18.0% (expressed as D-glucose), calculated on the dried basis.
Residue on Ignition: Not more than 0.5%.
Sulfur Dioxide: Not more than 0.005%.
