Chloride: A solution of 1.0 g in water shows no more chloride than corresponds to 0.10 mL of 0.020 N hydrochloric acid (0.007%).
Sulfate: A solution of 3.0 g in water shows no more sulfate than corresponds to 0.20 mL of 0.020 N sulfuric acid (0.0065%).
Heavy metals: 0.002%.
Hydrolyzable substances: Boil 10 mL of a 1 in 10 solution of it for 1 minute, and set aside for 2 hours: the solution appears as clear and as mobile as 10 mL of the same solution that has not been boiled.

Glycine occurs as a white, crystalline powder. One gram dissolves in about 4 mL of water. It is very slightly soluble in alcohol and in ether. Its solution is acid to litmus.

Identification: The infrared absorption spectrum of the sample exhibits relative maxima at the same wavelengths as those of a typical spectrum as shown in the section on Infrared-Spectra, using the same test conditions as specified therein.

Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
